Tinkler – How City Will Deal With Mayo Absence

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has discussed how his side will deal with the absence of Khanyisa Mayo, saying it’s an opportunity for other players to show what they are capable of.

Mayo is currently the DStv Premiership joint top goalscorer with Mamelodi Sundowns striker Lucas Ribeiro Costa – both sitting on seven goals.

However, last seasons joint-top goalscorer won’t be available for City’s final two DStv Premiership games in 2023 against Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town Spurs after he received a red card in the Western Cape Derby against Stellenbosch FC.

Speaking with iDiski Times, Tinkler stated that this is an opportunity for other players to step up and show their capabilities. The former Bafana Bafana defender also insisted that they are not a one man team.

“There’s nothing, I can do about it. I can’t be worried about [whether] Mayo is not available, Mayo is suspended, that’s just the situation we find ourselves in. It’s about the other players stepping up,” Tinkler told iDiski Times.

“You’ve got Jo Paciencia, needs to now step, you’ve got Luke Daniels, who needs to step up, you can’t be reliant on one person.

“As a team, we’ve never been relying on one person, everybody needs to contribute. Everybody needs to perform and when you get enough opportunity like Jo has, like Luke has, you got to grab it with both hands.

“So, players need to take that responsibility.”

City, who currently sit in fourth place, face log leaders Sundowns on 24 December at 15:30.
