Tinkler On Importance Of Getting A Result Against Pirates

Eric Tinkler is starting to be concerned about Cape Town City finishing outside the top eight and is looking for his team to get back to winning ways when they host in-form Orlando Pirates on Wednesday afternoon.

City started the year in the second position in the DStv Premiership, but have hit a difficult patch of form, and have not won in their last 10 fixtures in all competitions.

Speaking ahead of their game against Pirates, Tinkler said he hopes his team can take control of their own destiny, admitting with the results not forthcoming he is starting to worry about that top-eight position, something City have never missed out on since their formation in 2016.

“It’s getting very tight there, I think we have to [get worried],” Tinkler said.

“What you don’t want is to have to rely on others. Yes, we still rely on ourselves. But that can change if we don’t get back to winning ways. It doesn’t get any easier. The games are coming thick and fast and the opposition are all fighting for those exact same positions.

“It’s not going to be easy. It’s only Richards Bay really, and Swallows, although Swallows are catching up as well. So the result against Pirates is going to be extremely fundamental, at home not easy.

“And then we’ve got to take it game by game – Swallows, Richards Bay ,TS Galaxy and then a hard one away last game of the season in Sundowns.”

Tinkler is hoping the extra motivation of playing a big team like Pirates, who he coached nine years ago, comes into play on Wednesday.

“I’m hoping so, I’m hoping so,” he replied to iDiski Times’ question on the subject.

“I think we had one game since the turn of the year that I thought ‘We’ve got a problem here’, which was the Royal AM game.

“But I don’t think I can really say we’ve had issues as a squad for the rest of the games. So I think the camaraderie, the unity, the belief in the technical staff, it’s all still there.

“But now, like I said, the quality has to improve, you can’t be creating that many chances [but] are not capitalising on it.”
