Would Chiefs Give Downs A Guard Of Honour? Johnson Responds

Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson has refused to entertain talk about a potential guard of honour for Mamelodi Sundowns on Thursday, saying he’s not fussed about the permutations and only thinking about Amakhosi.

Sundowns could wrap up their seventh successive DStv Premiership title with a win against Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Thursday.

However, there is a mathematical chance that Masandawana already arrive as champions at the Calabash – should Golden Arrows beat second-placed Stellenbosch FC, who are unbeaten in 24 games across all competitions, at Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday.

In previous years, teams, including Chiefs, have given Sundowns a guard of honour, but Johnson insisted he’s only focussed on Amakhosi instead of worrying about such topics.

“I think when you when you think about all those permutations, we at the Village are not thinking of those permutations,” he told media.

“Stellies plays before us, we play on Thursday night, Stellies play on Wednesday night. Those are permutations. Those are things that are not bothered in our head.

“I think it’s always like that anyway. It comes from the horse-racing world where they put the permutations together. This horse ran that, than that one and so on.

“But this is a football race. So in saying that I’m not saying it’s not [happening], we’ll see what happens.

“But at the moment, we are only thinking about Kaizer Chiefs and how well Kaizer Chiefs can finish the league.”
