Benni McCarthy has said he would never have teased Cristiano Ronaldo about the 2006/07 term when the former Bafana Bafana striker finished with more goals than the Portuguese legend.
During his time at Blackburn Rovers, McCarthy famously finished second in the English Premier League Golden Boot race in 2006/07, behind Didier Drogba but ahead of Ronaldo and many other superstars.

McCarthy went on to work with Ronaldo at Manchester United, when the former Bafana striker was a first team coach at the club, and before Ronaldo left for Saudi Arabia.

When asked by iDiski Times editor Rob Delport if he had ever reminded Ronaldo about the season where he finished ahead of him in the Premier League scoring charts, McCarthy shot down the notion, saying he would never do that considering what Ronaldo went on to achieve, and also because in all the scenes they played concurrently McCarthy only finished about CR7 three times.
“No, I didn’t have to,” McCarthy told iDiski Times.
“I couldn’t! (Laughs) Because he’ll be like, ‘Benni’ [shaking his head]. I was above him only three times in his career, twice in Portugal, and then once in the Premier League.
“And after that look what he’s gone and achieved.
So uh-uh, I couldn’t be comparing notes like that with him!”
