United initially announced Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim coach, but reports on Monday evening emerge that they are working on a deal to sign Amorim.
The 39-year-old is said to be open to taken the role after winning two Portuguese league titles with Sporting over the last three years.
United are prepared to pay the €10 million release clause in Amorim’s contract, according to The Athletic.

Amorim had been linked with a move to Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp before the Reds opted to appoint Arne Slot.
