10-Man Chiefs Rally Back To Stun Bucs In Soweto Derby

The DStv Diski Challenge Soweto Derby lived up to its billing as 10-men Kaizer Chiefs produced a remarkable comeback to stun Orlando Pirates 2-1 at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Having already beaten the DDC table-toppers 2-0 in the first round, Amakhosi were eager to complete a double and claim the bragging rights over their fiercest rivals, and they did just that.

Chiefs were on the prowl first and almost took the lead just six minutes in however their chance went to waste as the effort sailed over the crossbar.

Oratile Rantasi thought he had broken the deadlock for Pirates in the 11th minute but was flagged offside.

Things got worse for Amakhosi in the 13th minute as Kabelo Nkgwesa was shown a straight red card for a deliberate handling of the ball in the 18-yard box.

Mpho Padime stepped up and converted the resulting spot kick to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

Despite trailing with a man and a goal, Amakhosi fought their way back into the game and found the equaliser through an individual brilliance by Steven ‘Stevie G’ Mendes in the 27th minute.

Chiefs took a shock 2-1 lead just three minutes into the second half with Kamogelo Malefo tapping into an empty net after a goalmouth scramble that saw Pirates fail to clear their lines.

In the earlier fixture of the day, Richards Bay snapped their five-match winless run with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a plucky Chippa United side.

The hosts’ hopes for a clean sheet were dashed as Bay broke the deadlock, courtesy of Khaya Ndlangamandla’s deft glancing header in the 57th minute.

With seven minutes left on the clock, the Chilli Boys grabbed an equaliser from a well-executed free kick by captain Avuzwa Mbembe.

Their celebrations were however short-lived as Phelelani Mtabela netted the winner for the Natal Rich Boyz in the 84th minute.

Sunday results:

Chippa United 1-2 Richards Bay

Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 Orlando Pirates
