11 New Faces In Broos’ Bafana Squad

Hugo Broos has named a provisional squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, including a host of new faces who will hope to impress the Belgian minder.

Broos has called up 37 players in his provisional squad, and while many are players he is now familiar with, there are eleven new names amongst the selections.

Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is one of them, although Petersen had been called up earlier this year but had to withdraw due to injury.

Petersen’s Chiefs teammates Siyabonga Ngezana and Phathutshedzo Nange have also been given an opportunity.

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana has been included for the first time, while there are recalls for Lebogang Maboe and Aubrey Modiba. The latter last featured for Bafana against Uganda last year in Broos’ first game in charge, while Maboe featured last at the COSAFA Cup before he got injured.

Broos has also called up Orlando Pirates midfielder Fortune Makaringe and Thembinkosi Lorch for the first time. Makaringe’s last appearance for the national team came in 2018, while Lorch last played in 2019.

Cape Town City’s Taariq Fielies and Khanyisa Mayo have also been given a chance by Broos, while there is also a call-up for Stellenbosch striker Ashley Du Preez.

Bafana will begin their qualification campaign with matches against Morocco away on the 9 June, before hosting Zimbabwe at FNB Stadium four days later.
