The agent of Manqoba Mngqithi has given an update on the situation of the Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach, whose current contract is expiring at the end of the season.

Mngqithi has been at Sundowns since 2014, initially working as assistant to Pitso Mosimane. But when Mosimane left to join Al Ahly in 2020, Mngqithi was appointed as co-coach alongside Rulani Mokwena.

However, after a slow start to the 2022/23 season and being knocked out in the MTN8 semi-final, Sundowns reshuffled their coaching department, with Mokwena becoming sole head coach, while Mngqithi was named senior coach and Steve Komphela becoming first team coach.

With Mngqithi now in the final six months of his contract, rumours have linked him with a move to Kaizer Chiefs to replace caretaker coach Cavin Johnson in the new campaign.

His agent Mike Makaab, though, has insisted that Mngqithi’s first preference is to sign a new deal with Masandawana and talks have been opened.

“We, at the moment, are speaking to Mamelodi Sundowns,” he said on Gagasi FM.

“Manqoba is happy at the club, we’ve said this all along. Now it just depends on us coming to an agreement with the football club to extend his contract.

“It’s still early days as far as the negotiations are concerned but I’m hoping that within the next seven to 14 days, within the next couple of weeks, we’ll have more clarity on Manqoba’s future.”

When asked whether Mngqithi is willing to stay at Chloorkop, Makaab’s message was very clear.

“Oh yes, he’s extremely happy at the football club.”
