Barker Confirms – He’s Joined Pirates

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has confirmed that video analyst Devon O’Brien has joined Orlando Pirates, adding he is not surprised after the season his side has enjoyed.

Stellies were among the stand out clubs in the 2023/24 season, finishing third in the DStv Premiership tied on 50 points with Pirates who finished ahead of them on goal difference.

This means they will participate in the CAF Confederation Cup next season. The Maroons also tasted cup glory after winning the Carling Knockout Cup, while reaching the semi-finals of the MTN 8 and the Nedbank Cup.

The club has also seen more call-ups to the senior national team with Jayden Adams part of the bronze winning Bafana-Bafana AFCON squad, Iqraam Rayners being part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while they had four players in the recent COSAFA Cup team.

Speaking to iDiski Times Editor Rob Delport in edition 161 of the newspaper, Barker confirmed O’Brien’s move to the Buccaneers, saying he is always happy when people find greener pastures and interest in his players and technical staff doesn’t surprise him.

“I think it’s a natural phenomenon around football,” Barker told IDiski Times.

“When you have success, suddenly clubs look at your players, and they start seeing the value that they bring to the club. And obviously, then they become that type of interest.

“So success brings interest in players and staff. I mean, you’ve probably read recently our video analyst Devon O’Brien has joined Orlando Pirates.

“So we’re not only developing players, but it seems like we’re developing staff also. But we’re always happy when people feel that they need to move, and they feel that they’re getting a better opportunity.

“I’ve always maintained as a person that we’re not here to stand in people’s way if there are better opportunities for them”.

“We’re happy for them. And for all our staff, and players who are recruited, there are never any regrets, it’s always wishing them well and hoping that they have success, wherever they go”.
