Chiefs Starlet Makes U17 AFCON Group Stage Squad

Even though he was unable to aid South Africa reach the semi-finals, Amajimbos captain Bokamoso Mokokosi was included in the U17 AFCON Group Stage Best XI after a stellar performance in the middle of the park.

The 16-year-old Amakhosi youth product was the only South African included in the squad despite fine displays from others like Emile Witbooi, Selwyn Stevens and Neo Bohloko.

Vela Khumalo’s charges suffered a heart breaking quarterfinal exit at the hands of hosts Morocco in a 3-1 defeat which came at the back of a 2-0 loss to Group B winners Burkina Faso.

They picked up just a single win in the tournament when they staged a 3-1 comeback to beat Egypt 4-3 in the tournament opener before being held to a 0-0 draw by Cameroon.

The rest of the squad is dominated by Morocco with four players in Chouaib Bellaarouch, Driss Chiekh, Abdellah Ouazane and Ilies Belmokhtar. Burkina Faso has two representatives – Issouf Dabo and Abdoulaye Latif.

The last four spots are taken by Ivory Coast’s Alynho Haidara, Senegal’s Alpha Mbengue, Seydou Dembele of Mali and Naim Telmoudi of Tunisia.

Perhaps the biggest surprise exclusion is that of the Burkinabe forward Souleymane Tapsoba who has been firing on all cylinders and has seven goals in just four matches for the Young Stallions.
