Two major upsets occurred in the last 16 of the Bayhill Premier Cup, as defending champions Cape Town Spurs and Stellenbosch crashed out.
The group stages concluded on Saturday morning, setting up an intriguing last-16 round that still featured all the professional clubs. But that was short-lived as Stellenbosch crashed out, losing 3-2 to the SAFA Cape Town Academy team.
It was a close call for AmaZulu, who needed penalties to get past Bayhill debutants Eagle Performance Academy.
Mamelodi Sundowns, however, booked their place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Rydersdal, while Cape Town City beat AmaTuks 2-0.
In the final game of the day, it was the Greek Gods who stunned Cape Town Spurs, as Hellenic won 1-0 to reach the last eight, joining other teams like Randburg, Ubuntu Football Academy, Cape Town City, Sundowns, AmaZulu, and last season’s finalists FN Rangers.
The quarterfinal draw has been conducted already, with two Gauteng sides facing each other and a much-anticipated mouthwatering clash between two Premier Soccer League giants in AmaZulu and Cape Town City. The road to Athlone Stadium is getting more interesting.
