African champions Banyana Banyana were put to the sword by Denmark as they conceded five goals without a reply in an international friendly played at Aalborg stadium on Friday evening.
Denmark showed dominance early on keeping the ball in Banyana’s half. There was a threat as early as the fourth minute from Sofie Svava when she found Jannie Thomson to try and get an early goal however the attempt was an easy save for Kaylin Swart.
There was a foul committed by Kholosa Biyana who earned her 50th cap on the night, giving away a set-piece however the defence did well to block the shot.
Josefine Hasbo tested Swart from range in the sixth minute and the South African number one denied her the opener before the JVW FC keeper was then called to make more crucial saves, first a from cross Thomson to Isabella Obaze in the 15th minute then an attempted header from Thomson herself in the 20th minute which hit the cross bar leaving the game tied 0-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Europeans made changes in goals bringing Alberte Vingum for Maja Bay Ostergaard.
The Danes intensified pressure on the African champions and broke the visitors’ defence six minutes into the second stanza with Obaze opening the flood gates. That was followed by Signe Bruun with a brace, the goals coming in the 55th and 56th minutes before she was replaced.
Bruun’s replacement Amalie Vangsgaard came on and scored her side’s fourth goal in the 64th minute. Svava could have made it 5-0 in the 73rd minute but hit the crossbar however her teammate Katherine Kuhl made up for the miss and slotted in the fifth two minutes later.
Banyana next play European champions England next Tuesday as they continue to prepare for the defense of their WAFCON title in Morocco next year.
