Did Fourth Official Whisper Into Refs Ear? Barker Questions Red Card

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker questioned the sending off of his player Devin Titus against Kaizer Chiefs, saying it seemed like the fourth official got involved in the decision.

Titus who has been in great for for Stellies was booked three minutes after the break and just seven minutes later he received his second yellow card, which meant Stellies were reduced to 10 men in their 2-0 defeat to Amakhosi.

It was the third successive match that Stellies ended with 10 men against Kaizer Chiefs, with Barker raising question marks whether the fourth official looked at the monitor and debated the decision with the match official.

“It’s always difficult coming in these press conferences, not having seen or watched but in my opinion the first yellow I thought maybe was soft just from where I saw it,” Barker told journalists.

“And then the second one, it’s a bit a of same narrative like last season. I don’t know where the fourth official speaks to the referee, because in my opinion he wasn’t gonna give the yellow card.

“My players heard him speaking or conversing, I don’t know where the fourth officials look at the monitor and then say ‘yes give the yellow or not give the yellow’.

“I’m not too sure how it works but it took a long while and there was a conversation held.”

After suffering back-to-back league defeats Stellenbosch now turn their attention to the MTN8 semi-final where they will host Orlando Pirates at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.
