It ended 1-1 between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, but there wins for Stellenbosch, Cape Town Spurs, Royal AM and Sekhukhune United as the opening weekend of the DStv Diski Challenge kicked off across the country.
Sunday afternoon’s ‘mini Soweto derby’ was one of the more anticipated fixtures of the weekend, and it was end-to-end action at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.
Pirates, who have made a lot of changes from last season, grabbed the lead in the 20th minute, with Mehluleli Maphumulo scoring a good individual effort. But Donay Jansen levelled matters with a good finish on the half-hour mark.
But while both teams continued to push in the second half, neither could find the all-important winner, and it ended 1-1.
On Saturday, there were three fixtures, but only Stellenbosch picked up a win, as they beat Chippa United 2-0, Roy-Keane Avontuur and Mervin Boji on the scoresheet. Meanwhile Mamelodi Sundowns and defending champions SuperSport United drew 1-1, as did Moroka Swallows and TS Galaxy.
Sunday saw Cape Town Spurs win their first game since returning to the competition, as a second-half brace from super-sub Luke Baartman sealed a 2-0 win over neighbours Cape Town City. Meanwhile, Royal AM beat Richards Bay 2-1, AmaZulu and Golden Arrows drew 1-1, while Sekhukhune United picked up a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City.
