Mamelodi Sundowns have booked their spot in this year’s MTN8 final after beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 on aggregate.
It took just 10 second before Sundowns had the ball in the back of the net as Peter Shalulile put Brandon Petersen under pressure, with the Chiefs goalkeeper kicking the ball against the striker, who then calmly slotted home from outside the box.
Chiefs, though, didn’t appear much shell-shocked and pressed well to deny Sundowns get much into of a flow.
Instead, Ashley Du Preez had a great chance to equaliser after 22 minutes, running past the Sundowns defence but his shot from a tight angle sailed over the bar.
Chiefs were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute when Sipho Mbule handled the ball inside the box following a corner. Du Preez stepped up and sent Ronwen Williams the wrong way to level the tie.
Sundowns were back in front just before the break when Lucas Ribeiro set up Shalulile, who calmly netted home at the far post.
The game started a bit slow in the second half but Chiefs came close to equalising in the 62nd minute when Christian Saile set up Du Preez, but his shot was superbly saved by Williams.
Just five minutes later, the roles where reversed, with Du Preez crossing to Saile, who was unlucky that his volley just sailed past the goal.
Chiefs had a late shout for a penalty for a kick on Mduduzi Mdantsane in injury-time but the referee waved play on.
Chiefs tried to press for an equaliser, which would’ve put them into the final based on away goals, but Sundowns closed shop and brought the slender advantage home.
