The Egyptian Football Association has backed Al Ahly and submitted their own bid to host this year’s CAF Champions League final.
It has been the biggest talking point of the week after CAF announced that this year’s CAF Champions League will be hosted in Morocco after Senegal withdrew.
The decision has caused an outcry on the continent over the competition’s fairness, with Wydad Casablanca likely having a home final after beating Petro de Luanda 3-1 in their semi-final first leg in Angola.
Similar to Wydad, Al Ahly have a foot in the final after the reigning champions beat ES Setif 4-0 in their first leg.
However, Al Ahly have been enraged by the decision of CAF to award the hosting of the final to Morocco for a second year running and even asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to intervene.
In addition, Al Ahly had also urged the Egyptian FA to submit their own bid to host the final, which EFA have now done.
“As part of the cooperation and coordination between the Football Association and Al Ahli Club, the Football Association has sent an official letter to the African Football Confederation (CAF) requesting that Egypt host the Final of the African Champions League for the current version 2021/2022,” the association said in a statement on Thursday.
“After Senegal withdrew from the competition to host the final, in addition to the speeches sent by the African Football Federation over the past days, objecting to the assignment of the final of the tournament to the State of Morocco, which violates the principle of equal opportunities.”
