Al Ahly’s former director of football Sayed Abdelhafiz has reserved special praise for coach Pitso Mosimane, describing the South African tactician as a football ‘genius’.
Mosimane, 59, joined the Club of Century from Mamelodi Sundowns in October 2020, and had a trophy laden career with the Red Devils in just two years, clinching the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup titles twice, and lifted the Egyptian League and Egyptian Cup once.
Upon leaving the land of the Pharaohs, Mosimane’s glittering career took him to the Gulf where he guided Al-Ahli SFC back to top-flight football before joining Al-Wahda and most recently Abha Club.
Abdelhafiz who still held up the Sporting Director role till August 2023, was full of praise for Mosimane, including a characteristic that sets him apart from other coaches who’ve taken up the hotseat at the Cairo giants.
“He [Mosimane] is simply world-class,” Abdelhafiz said via MBC Masr.
“I really enjoyed working with him in terms of the football knowledge he had and how he managed games.
“He won the Champions League with two different clubs. Of course, most managers will likely win a trophy with Al Ahly.
“But to win two Champions League titles and just miss out on the third one, albeit under controversial circumstances, is still a remarkable achievement.
“Usually he spent around five or six years at clubs he managed and he was only here for two years unfortunately but he was brilliant.
“When it came to big games, Mosimane was truly a genius in how he managed them.”
‘Jingles’ is currently unattached following Abha’s relegation to the second tier of Saudi Arabian football on the last day of the season.
