Gomes Sends Message Amid Criticism Over PSL Refs

Legendary South African Referee Victor Gomes has sent a clear message of referring in the country which has come under severe criticism this season.

Gomes, who retired after an iconic career, which took him to the highs of the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations was honoured with a Legends award at the Cosafa Awards gala on Thursday evening.

Speaking to the media after his honour, Gomes was probed about the controversial officiating in the DStv Premiership, having previously been at the centre of major criticism from coaches during his illustrious career.

“I think I’ve said previously that we’re setting up a stage for an era where we’re saying referees can’t make errors of judgement,” Gomes said.

“Just like a player who goes towards the goals to score, and if he doesn’t score, that means he’s made a mistake, so I think we need to change our mindset towards referees.

“We need to realise this is a team effort and the better the play is, the better refereeing is, the better the refereeing is, the better the play is. I think it goes hand in hand, and I think it’s important that we need to highlight this and work on it together.”

Gomes is currently the Chairman of the SAFA Referees Committee.
