Hlungwani Delivers Verdict After Chongo’s Lunging Tackle On Mbule

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has questioned match officials in their decision to not send off Kabaso Chongo after his lunging tackle on Sipho Mbule in Saturday’s friendly international in Gqeberha.

With just six minutes on the clock, and with Bafana Bafana on the attack, the Zambian defender lunged at Mbule to prevent an early goalscoring opportunity for the hosts.

Despite the clash being a friendly in preparation for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, ‘The Principal’ expressed disappointment in the referee producing just a yellow card even though Chongo displayed serious foul play.

“Here we see what we call a lunge. A player who lunge using one or both legs with excessive force is guilty of serious foul,” Hlungwani said on Soccerzone.

“The player got the yellow card but if you look at the lunge, the player was airborne and then Mbule survived this tackle there.

“In terms of the law, this is what we call serious foul play.

“If a referee gives a red card in this position, it’s supported.”

South Africa won the one-sided affair 3-1 in what looks like their final match before the AFCON tournament.
