SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt says the financial power of Mamelodi Sundowns does weaken the league, and it’s hard for other teams to compete consistently.
The SuperSport coach was speaking at the MTN8 media day ahead of Sunday’s quarter-final against Sundowns at the Tuks Stadium.
Hunt was asked a question about the strength of Sundowns’ squad and the depth, and he said it is difficult for others to compete with them, but he also understands they have other objectives.
“I think it’s true I mean, I don’t really want to go [there] because I don’t know if this is the right place, but I think it’s to the detriment of the football in South Africa. I think it’s weakened the football,” Hunt said at the MTN8 pre-match media day.

“I think because you’ve got a team so strong, that’s got such a strong bench and, and, and…
“But the nature of this type of business is obviously financial. I think even Chiefs or Pirates financially would struggle to compete with them, the prices, what’s going around.
“So I think it’s weakened the league in that perspective, but obviously, they obviously got other agendas, to do well in Africa. So you can’t really say too much, you know what I’m saying, but certainly, the gap is bigger. And on any given day, it’s gonna be very difficult consistency-wise. You’re gonna get the one-off results, which you’ve had the past couple of weeks.
“But consistency wise, over 30 games, I think it’s going to be very, very difficult to be at that level or close to them. Obviously, with a team like we had at Wits and that, we weaken the league because we were the big competition for them, in the last five, six years, and we would have been, but that team has disintegrated, and we know what happened there.
“So those type of things certainly weaken the league, there’s no doubt about it. But they do what they do, and nobody can complain about it. But maybe something down the line maybe needs to be looked at, but it is what it is.”
