Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena joked that he’s not allowed to hug Themba Zwane after he was elated by his Man of the Match display.
Zwane pulled out another midfield masterclass for Sundowns as they narrowly ground out a 1-0 win over AmaZulu to extend their record to 10 consecutive wins to start a new season.
It was rather controversial as Usuthu proved a massive challenge and saw a goal incorrectly ruled out for off-side from Hendrick Ekstein’s strike.
However, Masandawana went on to secure three points and after the game there was some light-hearted banter in reference to Gavin Hunt recently stating he’s not a fan of coaches hugging their players.
“I’m not allowed to give hugs to players,” Mokwena joked in the post-match interview with SuperSport TV.
“Congratulations to the entire Mamelodi Sundowns family, the supporters, the amazing turnout for a mid-week game, congratulations to this group of players – they work really hard and the technical team and the entire football club.
“I thought we were in control, we struggled in certain moments but it’s normal with the number of games – then you need to stay in the game with your mentality, which we have a good group of players with mentality.
“We had to suffer in certain moments but we were good with some build-ups, it’s not always easy coz the opposition is well coached, we grinded things out, it’s a sign of what really makes champions, fantastic today.”
