Is It The End For Jomo Cosmos?

One of the oldest teams in Premier Soccer League (PSL) Jomo Cosmos might be relegated to the ABC Motsepe League in the next two weeks.

Cosmos spent 12 seasons in the PSL before getting relegated for the very first time in 2007/08 season when they finished 16th on the log. Ezenkosi made an immediate return to the top-flight football in the 2008/09 season after winning the National First Division (NFD).

However, the team of the legendary Jomo Sono were never stable in the league since then even though the club continued to produce top-class players in the country, also going out of South Africa to uncover talent.

Sono’s squad last played top-flight football in the 2015/16 season but since then they haven’t returned to the elite level in South African football.

‘The Black Prince’ as he is famously known has produced the likes of Pitso Mosimane, Phil Masinga, Mark Fish, Morgan Gould, Dikgang Mabalane, Anthony Laffor, and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, to name just a few. Letsholonyane, went on to represent Bafana Bafana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and become a club legend at Kaizer Chiefs.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Yeye admits it’s hard to believe that Cosmos could be lost to professional football and be relegated to the third-tier and is hopeful that they can produce a miracle in their final four games despite having only won three games out of 26 in the GladAfrica Championship this season.

“That’s even difficult to think or imagine that happening. Jomo Cosmos is a big institution to be in the position they find themselves in,” Letsholonyane admits about the club formed 39 years ago.

“I just hope that players push harder for the remaining games to survive. For the history of the club, for their jobs and for the future talent out there. Wishing them everything of the best for the weekend and all the remaining games.”

Cosmos face 14th placed Tshakhuma on Sunday, before TS Sporting (15), Platinum City Rovers (8) and Pretoria Callies (12) on the final day of the season and they are currently in 16th place, seven points from safety.
