Makhanya On Title Hopes After Chiefs Defeat

Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge head coach Joseph Makhanya admits that their chance at a title shot might be a challenge with the huge gap after their narrow loss to rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Sunday.

Pirates’ six-match winning streak was ended by Amakhosi at Dr Molemela Stadium courtesy of Aden McCarthy’s second half penalty, as the men in black and gold completed a double over their nemesis this season.

The Buccaneers were reduced to 10-men in the first half and had to finish the match with a man down with the Sea Robbers’s gap being extended to eight points at the top by Chiefs after 23 matches.

‘Duku Duku’ feels there are games where they should have done better to at least get a point to minimise the gap between them and the league leaders with the former Pirates winger not yet throwing in the towel even though it is no longer in their hands.

“They just broke a six-match winning streak so it tells you that it’s easy to motivate the boys again, they must get back stronger so one game at a time. That is something we will do,” Makhanya told the media after their loss.

“If you are to check, there are still games left but again these are games that we were supposed at least maybe win or steal a point so that we know we are not far from it.

“The gap is too big now it becomes something you can’t really take home.”
