Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has made a bold statement about Thabang Matuludi, who’ll be competing with Khuliso Mudau for the right-back position at Bafana Bafana.
Matuludi was named to the final 23-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
His call-up comes after having played just four matches for Polokwane City following his comeback from a long injury layoff.
Mohafe hailed Matuludi as the country’s second-best right-back without mentioning who holds the top rank, saying the Rise and Shine defender will challenge Mudau for the position.
“I think Mudau is three or four years older than Matuludi and he’s a good competitor,” Mohafe said.
“I think he will give Mudau the best run for his money. I’ve always reiterated that Matuludi is the second-best right-back we have in the country.
“I’ll not mention who’s the first and who comes behind. I’m just saying that I believe he’s the second best.”
Mohafe stated that Matuludi has pledged to give his maximum effort should he get an opportunity to don the Bafana shirt in the next two fixtures.
“I’m a man who’s always speaking to his players and I told him that if it’s possible for you to go and represent the country, go there and represent yourself first, then Polokwane, as well as the nation,” Mohafe added.
“I spoke to him and he promised that he will give the best.”
