Mohomi – My Last Six Months Were Crucial

New Richards Bay midfielder Lucky Mohomi says his last six months with relegated side Marumo Gallants were crucial to remind everyone how good he is.

Mohomi was one of the stars for Gallants last season, featuring in 29 matches in all competitions, scoring one goal – a cracking strike against Sekhukhune United, as the Limpopo side reached the semi-final of the CAF Confederation Cup against all odds.

While things went well in Africa, Gallants lost their grip in the DStv Premiership to suffer relegation.

Having joined Sundowns from Free State Stars ahead of 2016/17, he saw game-time under coach Pitso Mosimane in his first season, but in the next four seasons, his numbers dwindled and he left without scoring a goal.

Despite that, Mohomi won the league three times, the Nedbank Cup and the Telkom Knockout trophy.

After finally leaving the Tshwane giants, he went on to join neighbours SuperSport United in October of the 2020/21 season.

But despite signing for two season, he left SuperSport after a year, joining Venda FC in the 2021/22 season. But in the following season, he was on the move again, joining Gallants where he shone through, saying the second half of last season was crucial to reviving his career.

“The chance I got at Gallants was the reason why Richards Bay signed me,” Mohomi replied to iDiski Times after Bay lost the KZN Premier’s Cup to AmaZulu on penalties.

“They saw at least I’m back to my best. It was a good six months that I had and I think I will continue where I left off.”

He added: “Getting that chance, it became something I needed to use, grab and show the people out there that I’m still here, the talent is still there and I worked hard. Where I’m at was because of the opportunities I got.”

When Bay signed Mohomi, chairman Sifiso Biyela was thrilled to have finally found a deep-lying number six after the sad passing of Siphamandla Mtolo in March.

Mohomi laughed when asked about the experience of having no club and saw the call that came through from Bay to join them.

“When you are at home and you receive such a call, you sometimes think ‘you didn’t deserve it’,” said Mohomi.

“It shows something good. To get a call from the chairman, I didn’t hesitate – I was so happy that at least I was doing something good. I was so happy to take this opportunity.”

Meanwhile, Bay are also assessing former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane, who was released by Baroka at the end of last season.
