Mokwena – Changes Won’t Affect Komphela & Mngqithi

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has dismissed talk that the recent technical changes at Chloorkop could also affect the roles of Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi.

Last week, FarPost first broke the news that two technical team members were recently informed to leave Downs’ camp in Limpopo and return back to Chloorkop.

Riedoh Berdien (strength and conditioning coach) and Marcus Mashilo (assistant goalkeeper coach) are now both awaiting their fate of either being redeployed into new roles are parting ways with the club.

Mokwena had since addressed the topic, saying “there will be even more changes” which led to questions over the futures of Komphela and Mngqithi, whose roles had changed back in October when Komphela was promoted to become First Team Coach and Mngqithi became the Senior Coach.

But Mokwena now dismissed claims that further technical team changes will affect the roles of the aforementioned duo.

“Hearsay, speculation, no,” he told reporters.

“We are very happy with the contributions of the entire technical team. When I said that it is only normal, it is only normal.

“Graham Potter to go from Thomas Tuchel and there were changes, for sure there were changes.

“The previous coach of Mamelodi Sundowns left and went to a different club and there were changes and technical changes.

“It is only normal, this thing is blown out of proportion because it happens maybe in between the periods where there is not a lot to talk about from a football perspective. That’s the only thing I can say with regards to that.

“The club is very happy with everyone, from coach Steve to coach Manqoba, to coach Wendell, to Sbu, who is the physical trainer, to the analysts and at the end of the day it’s the club that decides.

“The club decides my stay, the club decides everyone else’s stay, not just me. Because the club is far more important than any individual and will outlive each and everyone of us.

“It’s too big an institution for myself included to think that I am bigger than the club. I can only reiterate how happy we are to work with each other and be at service for the football club.”
