The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe was reportedly left furious after the executive committee voted in favour of Morocco hosting the Champions League final,
It was announced on Monday evening the Stade Mohamed V would host the continental final for a second consecutive season which was met with widespread outrage across Africa.
Motsepe was also criticised amongst sections of Egyptian media but a report from one of their biggest news outlets Yallakora suggests Motsepe was left unaware of what transpired.
It’s been suggested the CAF President was heavily in support of Senegal’s bid for the final and is set to open an investigation into the decision which was posted on the CAF official news channel.
A source close to the Motsepe camp stated he held a meeting within the executive office backing the Dakar final and strongly wanted a ‘West African’ showpiece in the home of the reigning African champions.
With the knowledge of the voting process within the exco committee, it has been alleged by the publication that Motsepe informed the Moroccan FA president Faouzi Lekjaa to seek a consensus with Augustin Senghor of Senegal to find common ground and have the event at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium.
However, it has since transpired that there was a landslide vote from the exco to back Morocco before Senegal officially withdrew its bid leaving the final venue uncontested for the 2021/22 campaign.
