Petersen On His AFCON Squad Chances

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen says it would be great if he is named in the final Bafana Africa Cup of Nations squad however, he is mainly focused on doing well for his club.

Petersen has enjoyed a good start to the current campaign where he has kept nine clean sheets for Amakhosi in 13 matches in all competitions. He is one of four Chiefs players in Hugo Broos’ 55-man preliminary AFCON squad to be trimmed down on Monday.

The last time he was called up to the senior national team was in March 2022 where he was part of the provisional squad for the matches against France and Guinea but couldn’t make the final cut because of injury.

After his side’s 1-1 draw with Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup, Petersen was asked how he feels about his chances of making the final team to Morocco later this month. He said just making the prelim squad was an honour.

“I think for me the main focus is always club football,” Petersen responded to iDiski Times.

“You know I always say my focus is here and to do well at team level. At the end of the day, it’s the coach’s decision to make.

“For me to be in the prelim squad is an honour and privilege you know. If I get selected it will be great for me but like I say focus is on club football and the rest can take care of itself.”
