Petro de Luanda coach Alexander Santos was asked whether he could imagine coaching in South Africa after a “big team” parted ways with their coach last week.
Santos has led Angolan giants Petro de Luanda to their first ever CAF Champions League semi-final after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 aggregate following a 1-1 draw on Saturday at FNB Stadium – Santos’s side came to the second leg with a 2-1 advantage after securing an important win in Luanda a week ago.
The 45-year-old was asked if he would be interested in coming to work in South Africa for a “big team” that doesn’t not have a coach after Stuart Baxter left Chiefs last week.
“Big team, big supporters, big stadium, this stadium I know it’s not [Mamelodi] Sundowns but the facilities of Sundowns is amazing,” Santos told local media
“I’ve never been here and the first impression is unbelievable because I know South Africa of course because I travel a lot of countries.
“I know South Africa is an amazing country but I didn’t see it with my eyes and now I see your organisation, your type of work here, your facilities everywhere. You have everything to be strong and to be one of the strongest countries in Africa. I think for me I’m very happy to work in Petro de Luanda.”
The Girabola log leaders will face Wydad Athletic Club in the semi-final. Both sides were in Group D of this season’s CAF Champions League campaign, when Petro beat Wydad in Angola before suffering heavy 5-1 defeat in Morocco on the final match day of group stages.
The semi-final first-leg is set to be played on 6 May in Angola, with return leg set to be played on 13 May in Casablanca, Morocco.
