Orlando Pirates teenager Relebohile Mofokeng says former Bafana Bafana stars Teko Modise and Bongani Khumalo have opened their minds to what’s beyond their career.
Both were speakers at their graduation from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Player Transition Program and enjoyed success post-retirement, which not many former footballers can attest to.
“The thing I mostly picked up [from their talks] was that all of them said football is [a] very short [career], you know, so you must go abroad and think [beyond] football, there’s another you that you don’t know,” Mokfokeng said.
“We are mostly focused on football [careers] so I think they just opened our mind that there’s life after football, there’s life without football.
“It was a learning process also learning from guys like Thulani Hlatshwayo, Rama Mphahlele, telling you where they come from and explaining what they did to play this long [at the top-flight level].”
The 19-year-old was the youngest graduate in the program in which he confirmed he put his hand up and volunteered to take part when he heard it was a chance to be part of the Gordon Institute of Business Science.
He went on to state on the field, in particular, he’s happy with his progress as he continues to enjoy regular game time under Jose Riveirio in his first full season of professional football.
“I’m trying, I’m trying, I’m still improving, learning from the older guys, so yeah, I can say I’m happy for my improvement and progress,” he concluded.
Mofokeng has scored two goals with three assists in 25 games across all competitions in the 2023/24 season.
