Benni McCarthy’s appointment has been well received by several Manchester United stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.
McCarthy, 44, was appointed as United first-team coach as part of Erik Ten Hag’s backroom staff. The former Cape Town City and AmaZulu coach will mainly work with the club’s strikers, but also assist in the overall positioning and attacking movements.
According to Daily Mail, McCarthy has started to implement extra shooting practice after being asked by Fernandes, which have proven popular among the squad, with Christian Eriksen, Ronaldo and Lisandro Martinez quick to join.
“So far it’s been really good,” McCarthy himself told Super Saturday on SuperSport TV.
“I’ve had a few opportunities to work with [Cristiano] Ronaldo and the rest of the guys upfront and working on our finishing and that,” he said.
“But as the time goes by, as the season starts and things start getting more hectic with the Premier League schedule, I think I’ll have more time to find my feet and then I’ll have my work cut out for me.”
McCarthy also opened up on this once-in-a-life chance to work for the club he’s been supporting all his life.
“This is life-changing and next level, next level,” he explained.
“Not even in my wildest dreams have I thought this would be remotely possible. But like I said, as a kid, if you have dreams, follow the dreams and never give up on anything.
“This is probably the biggest of the biggest that I could’ve imagined because you know me how Man United-daft I am, because that’s my team.
“And now to have the opportunity to go in there every single day, just try and learn, try and improve everyone around me and making the club a huge success as it was before.
“You know, together with the manager and all the first-team guys, it’s just been an experience and a half for me so far.”
