SAFPU ‘Concerned’ About Swallows Payment Embarrassment

The South Africa Football Players Union (SAFPU) has expressed its concern over the non-payment of Moroka Swallows players in this festive month.

Swallows’ non-payment led to the cancellation of their games against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday and Golden Arrows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.

“SAFPU is concerned over Moroka Swallows unresolved players payments,” the Union said in a long-worded statement.

“In an unprecedented turn of events, Moroka Swallows FC canceled a game that was scheduled for the 27 of December 2023 against Mamelodi Sundowns FC, citing unresolved payment issues and a breakdown of trust between the players and the club’s management.

“The decision has sent shockwaves through the football community, raising concerns about the adherence to contractual agreements and the overall integrity of the sport.

“Last night’s cancellation, coupled with a request to cancel the upcoming game against Golden Arrows FC scheduled for 30 December 2023, underscores the severity of the situation. The players’ decision to take a stand against non-payment issues has brought to light the challenges faced by athletes, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fair and respectful practices within the industry.

“The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) acknowledges the financial challenges some clubs may face due to sponsorship issues which primarily still favor the previously advantaged.

“However, SAFPU strongly condemns the non-payment of players’ salaries, as it not only violates contractual agreements but also places an undue burden on the players.

“SAFPU is committed to engaging with the affected Clubs and the League to address these challenges collaboratively. We understand that the financial model of football clubs needs a critical review, and we are willing to work with stakeholders to find sustainable solutions.

“The emphasis on Financial Fair Play is paramount, ensuring that players are not burdened psychologically but can fully focus on their inherently short-lived careers.

“The football community, as well as fans, deserve transparency and accountability in such matters, as contractual respect is fundamental to the fabric of the sport.”

It appears there was a breakdown in communication between Swallows and the PSL, as the game cancellation was announced just a few hours before the match against Sundowns, instead of a day in advance.

This is set to see Swallows getting a monetary fine by the PSL, as Sundowns had already made plans for the game and even arrived at the stadium along with the match officials and tv crews on Wednesday.
