Kaizer Chiefs legend Siphiwe Tshabalala has shared his views on the continuous showboating of Orlando Pirates star Patrick Maswanganyi, saying he isn’t a fan of showboating but the Pirates midfielder doesn’t do it to show off.
Maswanganyi, 25, is one of the outstanding players in the DStv Premiership this season and his fine performances have earned him a spot in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, with some claiming he could become the longterm replacement for Themba Zwane.
The Pirates attacking midfielder is continuously seen showboating, much to the delight of the Pirates fans, and Shabba insisted that although he’s not a fan of showboating, Maswanganyi does actually use his trickery to create space and opportunities instead of just showing off.
“I know there’s a debate about showboating, which I’m also against it – showboating that does not give direction or is not progressive,” the Nedbank Cup ambassador said during a recent online presser.
“However, you know, when that boy has the ball, he knows what to do with that ball. He plays so well, he plays forward passes.
“Yes, he showboats but in good positions and after that showboating, he gives a good pass. He showedboats to create space not to show off. So there’s a difference in that.
“So congratulations to him for the call-up. I also hope he cements his place. His performance is not only good for Pirates, but for for the national team.”
While Shabba’s former side, Chiefs, who are the record champions of the Ke Yona Cup have been knocked out of the competition, Maswanganyi and Pirates still have a chance to defend their title.
It means that fans of the Buccaneers and the other Last-8 teams still have a chance to win their share of R5 million as part of the Ke Yona, Ya Rona campaign.
