Orlando Pirates wing-back Bandile Shandu has opened up about the emergence of Thabiso Monyane in the first-team under Jose Riveiro this season.
Shandu, 27, was one of the standout players at Pirates last season as they went all the way to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup.
With seven goals and two assists in 45 games across all competitions, his impressive form earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad but this season he’s seen competition rise.
The former DStv Diski Team captain Monyane has started four of the eight games ahead of Shandu and he admits the competition has been nothing but healthy thus far.
“I think that you can see the way Thabiso has been playing, it’s pretty obvious he’s been playing very very well,” Shandu recently stated to the media.
“He started the season very good and we’ve just been supporting each other. That’s what teams are about.
“We have a good relationship and he’s been doing well, I’m supporting him, that’s the main focus and how we push each other as well, we do that every day. We have good competition and I’m happy for him.
The former Maritzburg United star says he’s not concerned about the situation at club level affecting his chances of retaining his place in the national team and he’s enjoyed mentoring Monyane.

“For me the team is important, whatever comes after is a bonus for me, put the team first and I’m not focusing on Bafana or anything personally, it’s just making sure that as a team we collect the three points and we play as a team,” Shandu explained.
“Whoever is playing is giving his all is most important. Whatever happens after that, personally, Bafana – that comes after the great performances the team gives in.”
He continued: “Like I said we’re pushing each other, it’s my first time playing this role and I’m enjoying it, you know, seeing what he’s doing right now.
“It’s great to see and I’m very happy for him. I just hope that he continues the work and keeps on doing what he’s doing, what’s working for him.
“That’s what I try to communicate with him – do what’s working for you. What’s working, try and do it constantly, that’s the conversation we’re having and I’m happy to see him thriving.”
