Luphumlo ‘Kaka’ Sifumba has opened up on various things including the death of his father – and rise to professional football with Cape Town City.
18-year-old Sifumba made his first debut last season against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium. This came after good performances in their DStv Diski Challenge side as he helped them to finish second.
“I did my best for the team, by doing my best for the team, I do the best for myself,” Sifumba told The Athletic about his DDC Player of the Season award.
“I’ve been scoring goals, helping the team move forward and assisting goals, but I am also a good team-mate. Sometimes we all feel down, but I have to be there to motivate the guys to do better until the last whistle. Even if we are 5-0 down, we must keep going. But of course, I was shocked to win the award, it’s been a great year for me.”
Sifumba lost his father Alberton Mzawupheli but the midfielder maestro used that as something to motivate him and keep going.
“I handled it very well,” he continued. “It stays on my mind, but it helps me focus. My dad used to support me all the time; he used to tell me about life and everything we would have, even if he were not alive. Everything he told me has happened or is happening now.”
With City not starting the season well the Phillipi-born talent mentioned that it has been a challenging start but they need to be strong mentally to overcome this difficult period.
“It has been challenging, man, We need mentality. Everybody wants to win, but when we’re not winning, I see the mindset, the body language, and the spirit go down. As a young man, I observe and see how people deal with these things in the industry, so when I get my chance, I know what I can do to help the team.”
The young midfielder dreams like any other play and he wants to see himself in Europe rubbing shoulders with the best players in the world.
“It’s something that sometimes stresses me, my everyday wish is to play in Europe, so I would like to be there and try myself against these guys and learn. It’s challenging, man. Maybe one day, God will answer my prayers.”
