Stellenbosch FC’s DStv Diski Challenge head coach Evangelos Vellios was left impressed by the “Young Maroons” after a hard-fought victory against English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League Next Generation tournament.
The Cape Winelands side got their tournament off on a good note as they recorded an all-important 1-0 victory by courtesy of an own-goal inside the first half.
Vellios was left impressed and proud of the lads but quickly wanted to shift the focus to the next one.
“I’m overwhelmed with emotions and joy just so proud of my boys, so proud of the club, and proud of the product that is the DStv Diski Challenge, it’s amazing footballers and we’re just proud to be able to present them as well,” Vellios told iDiski Times.
Stellies have yet another tough encounter against the hosts Aston Villa in their second #NEXTGen match. Villa won their first match 3-2 against Indian side Punjab FC by.
Vellios also spoke of how they will prepare for this encounter especially since there’s a short time in between.
“We will try to get the boys recovered, try to watch a bit of a game with them, see who they are (Aston Villa) try to find those little patterns, and then just get them recovered,” he added.
“I think that the boys are warriors. We’ve got a great mix of boys from the country, some Zulu warriors from Durban, some typical boys from the Cape Flats and they got that dog in them. So its all ou little combinations of cultures and we make this special and I hope that we’ve made South Africa proud and that you could see those mix of different players come together.
“Hopefully it sets the torn. Bafana Bafana is on the rise and the more players like this get opportunities in tournaments like this the better it is, the more the younger players play in the CAF Champions League and go to Europe, we pray that Bafana Bafana in time will also get back and its days like this that give hope to the young players.”
