Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United have confirmed their starting line-ups for today’s MTN8 quarter-final.
The final last-eight match is the Tshwane derby between Sundowns and SuperSport, and this one should be a firecracker. There have been so many thrilling matches between these two teams over the years, and this game shouldn’t be an exception.
But it hasn’t been the ideal start to the season for either Tshwane team in the DStv Premiership, though in Sundowns’ case it’s perhaps only relative to their high expectations. Gavin Hunt’s return to SuperSport has started a little rocky, but it’s still early days, and a good cup experience could be just the boost that Matsatsantsa need.
While the defending champions have won four super-eight trophies, last season was their first since the change in sponsorship 14 years ago. Having finally won it again after it had eluded the team for so many years, this will be the first of Sundowns’ trophies from last season on the line.
SuperSport have won two MTN8 trophies and three super-eight competitions overall, winning most recently in 2017 and 2019. Hunt won the trophy last in 2016 when he was in charge of Bidvest Wits.
Sundowns dominate a long head-to-head history, with 26 wins for Masandawana, 11 wins for SuperSport, and 10 draws. In fact SuperSport have not beaten Sundowns in three years, however, the last time they did win was in the MTN8 semi-finals, en route to winning the tournament in 2019.
Here’s how they line up:
Mamelodi Sundowns XI: Williams, Lakay, Mudau, B. Onyango, De Reuck, Mokoena, Jali, Maema, Zwane, Morena, Shalulile.
Subs: D. Onyango, Nasir, Lebusa, Ralani, Mkhulise, Mbule, Modiba, Mvala, Allende.
SuperSport United XI: Chigova, Ditlhlokwe, Hlatswayo, Lungu, Bhasera, Donn, Mbatha, Fluers, Maziko, Grobler, Rayners.
