Tinkler Questions Spurs Situation

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler feels like the coaching change at rivals Cape Town Spurs was a step back and Shaun Bartlett was a bit unlucky.

Spurs released Bartlett after eight losses in a row after he had helped the side to get back to the DStv Premiership.

He was replaced by now Technical Director Sean Connor, who remains the only one to have gotten three points for Spurs this season so far after they beat Orlando Pirates.

Spurs retained most of the players from last season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and only made a few signings, including experienced midfielder Keagan Buchanan.

Tinkler stated that there’s only one advice he can give, which is to boast the squad, questioning whether there has been any improvement since Bartlett left.

“Difficult for me to answer without criticism. I don’t [think] they’re playing the brand and football that they were under Shaun [Bartlett], my honest opinion,” he told journalists.

“I just thought right at the beginning Shaun was a bit unlucky in some of the results. I thought the performances were not as bad as what they’ve been since the changes.

“I think a little bit unfair on Shaun, but I understand eight losses in a row, we understand that. I think the obvious is strengthening the team, which I don’t think they did.”

Spurs are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with just four points from 16 games – nine behind second-from-bottom Richards Bay in the promotional playoff spot.
