Was Du Preez Offside? Hlungwani Delivers Verdict

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani believes that Kaizer Chiefs‘ second goal against Mamelodi Sundowns should not have stood and that Ashley Du Preez should have been flagged offside.

Sundowns fans were felt hard done by Chiefs’ 89th-minute winner which appeared to have been scored from an offside position which was not picked up by second assistant referee.

“The Principal” has since delivered the verdict that the score should have remained at 1-1 because Du Preez gained an advantage by being closest to the goal than Sundowns’ last man.

“We see a goal scored. Offside law says when a player is nearer to his opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-last opponent,” he said on Soccerzone.

“Let’s see who’s nearer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

“You’ll see it there at home because I will try and freeze it so that you can see who is nearer to the opponent’s goal than the ball and the second last opponent.

“Who is nearer to the line? You can see Du Preez is there when George Matlou cross the ball. He is nearer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second last opponent.

“So, that is offside!

“So, we’ll wait for interference because we say it’s not an offence to be in an offside position. When the ball is played, you play the ball, you are now interfering with play, therefore flag should come out.

“We’ll also show you why the assistant referee did not pick up the offside.

“He must be in line with the second last opponent. He was supposed to be here [in-line] but he’s here [back], so that is what made this decision a wrong call because he was wrongly positioned.”
