Orlando Pirates attacker Relebohile Mofokeng was correctly not flagged offside against AmaZulu, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.

Mofokeng rose high to beat the Usuthu defenders and open the scoring for their Buccaneers in their 2-0 Betway Premiership win at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last week.

Social media was flooded with complaints from the opposition fans that Mofokeng was in an offside position when he tucked away his header past Darren Johnson.

Hlungwani has since given Mofokeng’s goal the all-clear and further explained why the goal was allowed to stand.

“When the ball is played inside the penalty area, there’s [Yanela] Mbuthuma and Mofokeng there in an onside position,” he said on Soccerzone.

“We going to draw the line to show you that this goal was scored in line with the FIFA laws of the game.

“When the ball is delivered, we see Mbuthuma trying to head the ball. Does he head the ball? The answer is no.

“If he had headed the ball, it would’ve put Mofokeng offside. It means the original status remains that Mofokeng was onside.

“Therefore, when he scores a goal, a goal is scored in line with FIFA laws of the game.”
