What Johnson Previously Said About Coaching Chiefs

After Cavin Johnson has been appointed as Kaizer Chiefs interim coach, we take a look back what the former Al Ahly assistant previously said he could do if given the reins at Naturena.

At the time, Stuart Baxter had just been relieved of his duties, with Arthur Zwane and Dillan Sheppard initially taking over as interim coaches.

With the head coach role at the time vacant, Johnson said he believed he could build a team at Amakhosi.

“I’m honoured. I’m really, really honoured and I think Kaizer Chiefs, yes we can go there, and we can build a team,” he said after Calvin Sosibo suggested he’d be perfect for Chiefs job on Front Runner’s Monday Night Football.

“I believe you can build a team, but you have to have the people around you that’s prepared to build a team quickly.

“There’s a quick fix, and like Rob [Delport] has said, there’s a quick fix that can happen soon, but inside of that, there has to be a path as well.“

At the time, Johnson, who previously worked with Platinum Stars, SuperSport United and AmaZulu as head coach was unattached, having left his role as Al Ahly assistant under Pitso Mosimane at the end of the 2021/22 season.

When asked about what coach Chiefs need, he stated the Soweto giants need to look for a coach who will move the club forward and make them reach their full potential.

“This is what they need is to get someone to be able to intertwine with what they have now and make sure that they go forward positively,” he added.

“Because Chiefs cannot take a back step. Like Rob said, a Stellies or an AmaZulu, they can’t take that step. For them to take that step back, it’s a non negotiable, they can’t take that step back, they can only go forward.

“They cannot take a step back because they are, and I say this in all respect, they are the biggest club in the SADEC region, and they have to respect that. It’s time they have to respect that, themselves.”

Back in September, Johnson was appointed as new Head of Academy at Naturena, but he was now named as First Team coach on an interim basis after the departure of Molefi Ntseki, with Dillan Sheppard remaining his assistant while Arthur Zwane has left the first team and was redeployed in development.

Johnson is yet to make a public appearance since being appointed as interim coach.
