Williams Opens Up On ‘Asking’ Broos For Mofokeng Debut

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has opened up about his role in Relebohile Mofokeng’s senior national team debut, saying he doesn’t deserve any credit for it.

The Orlando Pirates teenage sensation was called up to Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers double-header against Nigeria and Zimbabwe and made his debut late on in the 3-1 thrashing of the Warriors at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

After the match, Broos had confirmed that Williams asked him on the on the touchline to hand the 19-year-old a run, with Teboho Mokoena kicking the ball out of touch for Mofokeng to come on.

Speaking to iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu in edition 160 of the newspaper, the recently crowned PSL Footballer of the Season winner downplayed his role and said credit should go to Mofokeng for his talent, his family and club for the support they are giving him to be as good and as fearless as he is.

“First and foremost, we had a plan for the camp,” Williams told iDiski Times.

“The coach said we wanted four or six points, and we achieved our target. Six would have been outstanding, but four is amazing as well. We are still sitting on top of the log – yes, there is a goal difference involved, but the point is we are there, and that is the ultimate to stay in the chasing pack and get a gap between you and the others down there.

“We need to start opening that gap, and that is exactly what we’ve done. Coming to Mofokeng, he’s such an amazing person, just a happy soul, a happy boy. When I see him each and every day he is just happy smiling. He just fitted in like a glove.

“When I watched him at training, I saw a kid that’s happy to be part of the Bafana Bafana set-up, and rightfully so, he made a debut.

“No credit must be given to me; it must be given to him, his team, and his family for helping him. I mean, he had an amazing season at such a young age, and he is so fearless, so big up to him. He deserves his debut fully.”
