Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane revealed Stellenbosch FC as the toughest opponent he’s faced off against during the 2023/24 campaign.
Despite coming short twice against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup finals, the 34-year-old veteran attacker still reckons that Stellies is the toughest opponent they’ve come up against.
Sundowns did manage to beat Steve Barker’s charges three times, and ended their 25-match unbeaten run. Zwane missed out on the first round tie where Masandawana ran out convincing 3-1 victors, courtesy of strikes from Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba, and Siyabonga Mabena, while Devin Titus netted the consolation for the Cape Winelands outfit.

“Stellenbosch FC. They are a young team, full of energy,” Zwane said in his Q&A with PUMA.
“Their team spirit is always high, and they are ready to run for each other. They also have a good coach (Steve Barker), and his style suits the players, so it is always a difficult game.”
‘Mshishi’ played a part in the Ke Yona Cup semis at Danie Craven Stadium where Downs narrowly beat the home side 2-1, with Thembinkosi Lorch and Khuliso Mudau on the scoresheet.
The last game between the two sides was in Cape Town which was the second round of the DStv Premiership. Sundowns won 1-0 through Lesiba Nku’s solitary strike with Zwane getting 82 minutes in that clash.
