Cupido On Surprise Starting XI Return

Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Keanu Cupido admits that playing for the Betway Premiership champions is not a walk in the park.

The 27-year old’s comments come at the back of his good performance in Sundowns’ opening match at the FIFA Club World Cup against Ulsan HD becoming the first African side to register a victory and shoot to the top of Group F with three points.

Cupido admits it has been tough to recover from injury and break into the starting team however felt the timing was perfect for him to start and have an impact in the team in Orlando, Florida and repaid faith shown in him by the coach and those around him.

“It’s not like a walk in the park at Sundowns you need to work hard,” said Cupido after the game.

“You need to be ready; you need to be ready when they call you. I think I was ready when he [Miguel Cardoso] called me.

“For me, I feel like it’s been tough, but I think God’s timing is always perfect. So, I think today I took it with both hands, and I felt proud of myself and also, I think I have to give back to people that trusted in me.

“I want to thank each and every one, my wife as well, she’s been very supportive. It’s been tough not playing and today I feel like I made a few of people proud and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

Sundowns’ next game is against German side Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at the TQL Stadium at 18:00.
