FIFA has confirmed the massive participation fees and prize money for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, with Mamelodi Sundowns in for a big payday.
Masandawana are one of four African teams to feature in the newly-formed tournament, alongside Al Ahly, ES Tunis and Wydad AC.
Sundowns have been drawn in Group F alongside Borussia Dortmund, Fluminense and Ulsan HD, with the tournament set to kick off on 14 June.
On Wednesday, FIFA has confirmed the record-breaking prize pool and participation fees for the tournament.
“The distribution model of the FIFA Club World Cup reflects the pinnacle of club football and represents the biggest-ever prize money for a football tournament comprising a seven-match group stage and playoff format with a potential payout of USD 125 million foreseen for the winners,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“In addition to the prize money for the participating teams, there is an unprecedented solidarity investment programme where we have a target of an additional 250 million dollars being provided to club football across the world. This solidarity will undoubtedly provide a significant boost in our ongoing efforts in making football truly global.
“Not only that, but FIFA will neither retain any funding for this tournament, as all revenues will be distributed to club football, nor will it touch FIFA’s reserves, which are set aside for global football development through the 211 FIFA Member Associations.”
As a consequence, Sundowns and the other three African teams will receive a whopping R174 million in participation fees, while European clubs will even bank R233 million to R696 million (determined by a ranking based on sporting and commercial criteria).
Even though these fees are still massively high, they are substantially lower than the $50 million participation fee initially targeted by FIFA. However, those figures could not be reached after several issues with attracting sponsorships and tv. money.
