Messi Discusses 2026 World Cup & Mbappe Relationship

Lionel Messi has discussed his chances of continuing to play for Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and also opened up on his relationship with Kylian Mbappe after beating his club teammate in the World Cup final.

Messi had indicated that last year’s final would his final match at football’s biggest stages, saying ahead of the penalty win over France that he believes the final would be his last World Cup match.

However, after leading Argentina to their first World Cup trophy since 1986, there have been calls for Messi to continue and return to defend the title in 2026, including from Albiceleste coach Lionel Scaloni.

Messi has now indicated that he is not ruling out playing at the 2026 tournament in the United States.

“Because of age it’ll be difficult to make 2026,” he told Argentine publication Diario Olé, as cited by ESPN.

“I love playing football and while I feel like I’m in good shape and enjoying this, I’m going to keep at it.

“It seems like a long time until the next World Cup, but it depends on how my career is going.”

Messi also opened up on his relationship with Kylian Mbappe after some Argentina players celebrated in front of his Paris Saint-Germain teammate and he got trolled by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

“With Mbappe, we talked a bit about the game, the celebrations. But that’s it,” he added.

“I happened to be on the other side, losing a final, and I didn’t want any of that talk. That’s why I don’t want to broach the subject, but no problems with Kylian.”

At club level, more eyes will be on Messi over the coming week, as Mbappe has been ruled out for around three weeks after picking up a knee and thigh injury against Monpellier in midweek.
