The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations last-16 fixtures have now been confirmed with Comoros the last team to secure qualification to the knockout stages.

It’s been an unthinkable journey for the tournament debutants who were seemingly playing for pride when they faced off against four-time African champions Ghana on Tuesday.

With 1-0 and 2-0 defeats at the hands of Gabon and Morocco respectively, they came out guns blazing against the Black Stars and managed to score the first-ever goal in AFCON history added to a historic first win.

The 3-2 result somehow propelled them to one of the best third-placed finished sides on three points after champions Algeria lost to Ivory Coast 3-1 and departed the tournament with just one point.

Fellow debutants Gambia also secured their passageway to the business end of AFCON, as well as Malawi; the so-called minnows are now mixing up with the giants in the newly expanded 24-team event.
