Al Ahly Start EFA Cup With Draw

January 13, 2022

Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly team, without Percy Tau and a number of stars, started the EFA Cup with a draw, playing to a 0-0 result against Al Gouna in their opening match on Thursday.

Ahly in fact only had seven regular first team players as they were not only without those at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, but also had to exclude a number of regulars, including Tau, because of positive Covid-19 tests.

Mosimane had to turn to the club’s reserves and called up fifteen young players to bolster the squad.

The EFA Cup has been formed by the Professional Clubs’ Association so that  Egyptian Premier League clubs could remain active during the Afcon.

All 18 teams are participating in the Cup, and have been split into three  groups of six teams. Ahly are in Group B alongside Ismaily, Smouha, Arab Contractors, NBE and their opponents today.

While Ahly’s starting line-up was inexperienced, Al Gouna had the luxury of picking a full strength team, with none of their players at the Afcon.

It was a match where both team had few opportunities, but neither were able to take advantage and it ended in a goalless draw.
