De Sa Opens Up on Egypt Selection Criteria
Egypt assistant coach Roger de Sa has revealed insight into their selection criteria after recent questions surrounding Magdy Afsha and Mohamed Sherif being omitted from the previous squad.
When Carlos Quieroz named his first squad alongside De Sa, there was widespread debate over the selection with Afsha and Sherif – two key players of Al Ahly – left out of the squad to face Libya.
However, after the 3-0 away win, not much was uttered from local media before the duo returned to the team for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Gabon.
Three points will guarantee the Egyptian national team’s qualification to the playoffs of the World Cup qualifiers and ahead of the tie de Sa was responsible for the press conference duties after Queiroz suffered a leg injury.
“When we choose players, we have to look who’s fit and who’s not, also some players could be out for injury, so we choose according to the game plan,” as translated via the EFA official website.
“Angola is a good team, they will be aiming to win, we know that and we are preparing for it. We don’t choose younger players just for the sake of it, the ones we chose are all chosen for their performance in the league.
“After watching many league games, we found a lot of players to choose from, and we always aim to improve the performance. We have worked with multiple European clubs, and we have a sports psychologist that had worked in Europe as well, we know how to deal with our players.”
