Al Ahly’s CAFCL Record That Will Worry Downs

With Al Ahly hosting Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, there is one record of Pitso Mosimane’s side that will worry his former team.

The DStv Premiership champions have traveled to Cairo for the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final.

They will meet someone very familiar in Mosimane, who coached Masandawana between 2012 and 2020.

More worrying than facing two-time CAFCL winner Mosimane will be Al Ahly’s recent home record in the competition.

With both teams meeting each other for a third consecutive season in the quarter-finals of the competition, the Club of Century have won all three of their CAF Champions League homes games against Sundowns by an aggregate score of 6-0.

They have also reached the quarter-final of the competition for a fifth season in a row and progressed in three of their last four ties to the semi-final.

However, the only opponents who eliminated Al Ahly at this stage over the last five years were Sundowns, beating them 5-1 on aggregate in 2018/19.

Downs, meanwhile, have failed to win any of their last five knockout games in the CAF Champions League, drawing two and losing three, since their famous 5-0 victory against Al Ahly in the 2018/19 quarter-finals.
